Makes 12 Servings

You will need:

1 ½ teaspoons of baking soda
1/3 cup of vegetable oil or ½ cup of shortening
2 ¼ cups of flour
1 ¾ cups of sugar
¼ teaspoon of salt
1 teaspoon of vanilla
3 eggs
1 1/3 cups of cold water
½ a cup of unsweetened cocoa powder

Preheat the oven to 350. Grease and lightly flour a 9x1½ round baking pan.
Set aside. Stir together all dry ingredients flour, cocoa powder, salt and baking
soda. Set aside.

In a bowl of an electric mixer on medium speed beat together the oil or
shortening, sugar and vanilla until well combined. Add the eggs one at a time.
Add the flour mixture and water beating on low until well combined with mixture.

Pour batter into the greased baking pan and bake for 35 to 40 minutes. Check
your cake with a cake tester or a toothpick by pricking the cake in the center. If
the tester comes out clean your cake is ready to come out of the oven if it
comes out with a little cake batter on it the cake may need a few more minutes.

After taking the cake out of the oven let it cool on a rack while still in the pan for
about ten minutes. Remove from pan when cooled and apply chocolate frosting
and serve.
